Save Children from Dying in Hunger

For years now, poverty has been one of the world’s biggest problems for its tragic results. Poverty exists across the world. Poverty has a big impact on the children. Also, poverty cause people to die in hunger and of homelessness. Lastly, poverty leads to economical degradation and government dysfunction. For these reasons, people should be more aware of poverty and help stop it from getting worse. Before it becomes any more bigger poverty is worth fighting against.

The first tragic result of poverty is the effect it has on the children. According to UNICEF, One billion children around the world are born into poverty. When infants are born into poverty, they tend to have low birth weight, which increases the chance of having mental and physical disabilities. These children with disabilities are assumed to die before turning two years old. Despite the low chance, there are still some children who avoid being born with these disabilities. However, they are more likely to have disabled vision, hearing and brain dysfunction. Poverty can be very dangerous because when children are born into poverty, they become trapped in a cycle of poverty. Also, poverty can affect children academically. Many children in poverty suffer academically, mostly because of the lack of education. Lack of education will be led to lack of brain development, which overall affects the children academically. After childhood, the lack of development begins to show impatience, impulsivity, inappropriate emotional responses and many more. For these reasons, the majority of children living in poverty cannot reach the academic level of the children not living in poverty. Education is important when it comes to future careers. However, the kids in hunger don’t have opportunities to think about their future career because of poverty. Without a career, there is no source of income, which means that when uneducated kids have a family, they wouldn’t be able to support and feed their families. If this keeps happening, there will be more and more cycle of poverty around the world.

Another reason why poverty is worth fighting against is because poverty causes people to die of starvation. Recently, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations noted that almost 1.2 billion people around the world go to bed hungry everyday. This type of living has been continuing for years now. Skipping meals will bring malnutrition, which can cause weight loss, poor growth and even internal organ dysfunction. This is a big problem as people in poverty don’t have enough nutritious food to feed their body. As a result, NCCP (National Center for Children in Poverty) stated that 15 million children across the world are found dead every year because of malnutrition. That is about 200,000 children dying each day from poverty. Also, poverty relates to homelessness. People under absolute poverty (not being able to live a secure life) cannot afford a regular dwelling, which leaves them to ‘rough sleeping’, where they just find a place outside to sleep. 100 million and more people are homeless and becoming homeless. It is also a large problem around the world. In 2008, there were around 600,000 homeless families, including 1.35 million children. As of today, the size has decreased a lot. However, if poverty continues, homelessness continues as well. These statistics of death rates of people under poverty and the size of homelessness show how many people are in need of help.

Finally, poverty causes nations’ economies to be weakened and government dysfunction makes it hard for a nation to recover. As said above, many people living in poverty lack education. Thus, this percentage of the population is not helpful to the country and its economy. First of all, the government becomes weaker and weaker because of the lack of development. This type of regressive government function will worsen the economy, which leads to degradation to LEDC (Less Economically Developed Country) in no time. A decent example would be the bankruptcy that happened in Zimbabwe in 2008. CNN reported that Zimbabwe’s government suffered from a food shortage (poverty) and hyperinflation, which caused their economy to shrink in a blink of an eye. During that time, both unemployment and poverty rate was at about 80% and was still increasing. Poverty can bring many other side effects than the results it is famous for. Poverty can become dangerous to people and the nation in a flash. Also, poverty has to stop before it hurts the economy as the government suffering from poverty is unlikely to go back to its original economic state. This graph by Maxim Pinkovskiy, the professor of economics in Columbia University, focusing on $1/day poverty and growth in Sub-Saharan Africa, clearly shows how the poverty rate co-relates to the GDP (Gross Domestic Product) rate. As you can see, as the poverty rate increases, the economic growth was seen. On the other hand, as the poverty rate decreased, the GDP rate decreased too. This graph proves that if poverty exists, the economy of the nation can’t grow, which means if the economy is in a weak state, poverty will bring it down more. Poverty needs to be stopped before it begins to hurt a nation’s government and economy.

Although poverty seems to be unstoppable,s there is hope. The UN’s millennium development goals is one of the biggest projects that help end poverty. The UN promised that poverty should end by 2015 if everybody participates. Fortunately, poverty is actually falling in Africa. From 2000, almost all countries around Africa began to work towards ending poverty and now, the poverty rate has decreased hugely. Because every bit helps, all people across the world should help end poverty.

Teenagers Are Not the Exception

Nowadays, the proportion of obese teenagers is rapidly increasing. Recent health statistics show that at least more than 15% of teenagers among the world population are obese. It is also predicted that the rate of growth will endlessly increase. Obesity is when too much fat is stored in the body causing negative effects on the body. This is a fatal problem as during the period of puberty, obesity can torment teenagers in various ways. Teen obesity damages health, lead them to several other harmful diseases and worsen academic progress. It is worth fighting against teen obesity.

Obesity is highly risky as it can expose the teenagers to other diseases that can be harmful to their mental and physical growth. Teens who are obese tend to be more vulnerable to more dangerous diseases such as diabetes, heart attacks, respiratory problems and a lot more. Obese teenagers like watching TV, playing games, and other activities that do not involve exercise and obviously those types of activities are not good for the growing teenagers as . These types of activities attract teens to work out less. Exercise is necessary to strengthen bones, joints and muscles to keep the body in good shape but more problems will be caused from lack of exercise. Also, as teenagers go through puberty, the body needs a lot more food as energy. Instead of eating healthy and organic foods that keep the body in a good shape, teens prefer junk food. Almost all junk food contains a lot of fat, sugar and sodium/salt. Sugar is very addictive and the addiction of sweetness forces all people to eat more which is one reason junk food causes obesity. As a result, it produces high blood pressure, diabetes and even cancer. On the other hand, sodium/salt also causes obesity as it puts teens in thirst and lead teens to more intake of unhealthy beverages such as coke and other sodas. Sodium/salt can produce heart disease and soft drinks can cause joint and muscle problems and tooth decay. The developed technology, unhealthy activities and the wrong choice of diet cause health risks that can harm the teenagers.

Health risks are not only the problems of teen obesity. The physical appearance of obese teenagers also causes problems in their daily life. Teens with obesity tend to have more psychological troubles than other students because they are frequently insulted for their physical appearance. The majority of obese teenagers will feel depressed, stressed, lonely and have low self-esteem. The common way obese teens get rid of this stress is by eating more or sleeping less. As a result, sleep deprivation and weight gain might happen and a vicious cycle where it gets worse. Additionally, obese teens are likely to have social disabilities. Obese teenagers have social disabilities because they have no courage to stand up and say what is wrong or fight back, and they are afraid that they will be isolated from the group and be insulted again. Many immature students often have biased perspectives and make fun of overweight students. They think fat people are lazy, stupid and that they are inferior. Obese teenagers have to face mental troubles and suffer from the environment they have mostly because of their appearance.

The worst reason why obesity is dangerous is that obese teens probably will have a less brighter future. As I mentioned above, obesity can cause some mental problems and they affect how well the teenagers function in school. With all the mental problems caused by obesity, obese teenagers have hard time trying to concentrate during class time and listening to the teacher. As a result, obese teens don’t learn the basic concepts or the topic of each subject and consequently fail. Poor performance in school has a huge effect on obese teenagers’ lives as many people around the world judge others based on their academic progress. In other words, obese teenagers have less of an advantage of having a brighter future than others who had no problems until graduation. If obese teens are judged to be not as useful or smart as others, they will have less opportunities to do what they want because nobody will acknowledge the effort nor the talent. This again reduces the opportunities or the goals that the teenagers aimed for. So many talented teenagers are being unacknowledged by something that is not their fault - the academic progress and their appearance.

15% of all teenagers around the world are obese and more teenagers will be in the future. This is a serious matter as obesity can be a vicious cycle that never stops and burdens teenagers by endangering their health, causing troubles in their daily life and eventually disturbing their future. What will happen to the future generations if we leave this huge problem as it is? Teen obesity is something that people should show concern for.

Burning Our Home

What did environment did to us that we have to harm and kill it? All that the environment did was provide natural resources for us to live. Environment is the way that the world was made from the beginning. However, these days, the environment started to disappear because of us. People knew that they could use environment for their own benefits and that was when people started harming or killing the environment. Environment is worth fighting for.

Environment is very important for us as it provides us what we need. The linear system of wasting, consuming and trashing should stop because it hurts environment and earth does not have infinite amount of natural resources to keep providing 'stuff' for us. Even today, natural resources are running out. Some countries are even buying them to support their own country. People began to chop down all the trees in the forest, wipe out animals, pollute the air along with water, and use nature in all sorts of ways for their own benefits. Scientists estimated that environment can provide people about 33 trillion dollars a year and that amount is almost twice of all GDPs of countries around the world combined.Eventually, the environment will vanish and we will not be able to live in a clean world like now. During the video 'The Story of Stuff', Annie Leonard, the filmmaker, mentions that less people are using more resources. America is one of the examples how just 5% of the entire population is using 30% of all the natural resources that exist in the world. As a result, 80% of the original force is gone. However, it is not only America that is facing this problem. Scientists around the world say that at this rate, the world will run out of natural resources by 2050 or else we will need to cope it with resource demand. These days, the environment is getting hurt more as people are not caring so much about the environment and do not know how important the environment is for us. People should start realizing that we cannot live without it and we should stand up to protect it.

One another example why environment is worth fighting for is because environment is our home. Nobody wants to live in a dirty home, which means that we are the ones who are responsible for keeping the world clean. However, the environment is getting polluted and dirty due to the humans’ activities recently. In the end, there will be no clean water, no clean air and no living things. Instead, it is going to be filled with factories, cars and other machines that let out polluted air that harms us and the world. However, it is not only America that is facing this problem. A few years ago, Korea, as one of the members of OECD (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development) countries, had the most amounts of trash and unrecyclable items produced. Before, people used to get rid of the trash by burying them in a hole or burn them. After the report, people realized that those ways could damage the environment a lot, and they started to become more aware of the importance of recycling including reducing the amount of trash. These days, the environment is getting hurt more as people are not caring so much about the environment and do not know how important the environment is for us. People should start realizing that we cannot live without it and we should stand up to protect it. After the report, people realized that those ways could damage the environment a lot, and they started to become more aware of the importance of recycling and reducing the amount of trash. As we are responsible for it, we should help keep our home clean at least a little. And as we all know, every little helps.

Lastly, environment is worth fighting for because Earth is the only habitation that we can live in. It is the only planet that let us breath, drink, eat and live. The book 'Knife of Never Letting Go' gives readers the message that we should start really thinking about conserving the environment. The story is generally about a boy called Todd revealing all the truths that was hidden until he was mature enough. However in the book, a new world/planet is introduced and the reason why the settlers came to the New World was because the Old World was impossible to live in. All the natural resources were gone and it was already all polluted as there was no nature protecting the Earth. I think that Patrick Ness, as the author of the book, was trying to send the message of how important the environment is for the world, for us as well, to the readers. Unless we want to live in a New World where we have nothing to start with , just like in the book 'Knife of Never Letting Go', we should better start thinking about the what environment is doing for us and how it is the only planet that allows us humans to live.

People are not really acknowledging the environment for what it is doing for us. Earth is a finite planet that supports us with never-ending amount of natural resources. It is obvious that they will soon run out and people will struggle to find other natural resources that can replace. If Earth is our home, a place where we live everyday, why do we have to harm it? If we just left the way it was before, Earth still could have been a healthy planet. Earth is the only planet that let us live. Other planets can't because Earth is coincidentally made in a way for us, humans to live. Environment is worth fighting for.

Nothing is Impossible

Jhamak Kumari Ghimire, is an young Nepalese woman born with no arms and with disability of being unable to speak. Recently, she has won an Madan Puraskar prize for her book 'Is life a thorn or a flower?' (autobiographical essays) in age of 30. Not only that, she wrote four volumes of poetry, two storybooks and many newspaper columns and articles. As she was not sent to school, the only way she could learn how to write was to listen to her sister studying. It is amazingly inspirational how she didn't give up on learning how to write. It should have taken her most of her youth time for her to learn how to write just by listening to her sister. She had achieved her dream and proved that nothing is impossible and it is worth fighting for. Impossibility is worth fighting for.

Impossibility is important to fight for because everybody will acknowledge you for the progress of fighting and achieving it. Jhamak Kumari Ghimire, who spent most of her life doing her writing, went through the progress of fighting the impossibility. It would have taken a lot of practice for her to write an essays and poems with her foot. Now, after she received a Madan Puraskar prize, one of the most prestigious award of literary in Nepal, everybody feels amazed by the fact that she did write an essay with her foot and show respect for her progress and hard work. But that is not all. People feel more amazed that her writing is as good as other famous authors. What made she so good at writing is that she read whole lot of books and most importantly she works as a columnist at the Kantipur newspaper (Nepalese newspaper). She was practicing her writing as a columnist and it is obvious that she tried to improve her writing more and more until she was satisfied with her writing. I was also shocked at how good her writing is. Her writing was filled with various types of luxurious words with correct grammar. Look below for her poem 'What is the Interpretation of the New Millennium'?. It is a poem about poverty and how even kids are suffering from poverty. She mentions all the bad things happen to the orphan kids who are in poverty and how we are not helping when we could be support so much for them.

Additionally, impossibility is important to fight for as there is always a happy end to it. If Jhamak Kumari Ghimire didn't even try to learn by listening to her sister and practice writing with her foot, she would have never made it to receiving Madan Puraskar prize. However, Jhamak Kumari Ghimire never gave up and spent a lot of time learning to write and write with her foot. 'I could not share that moment's joy with anyone, but my first letter was written in the dust on the ground and in my heart I could pronounce it. I was so happy that I rewrote the letter 'ka' many times. I was so moved by this quote how she had overcome her disability and worked really hard. She says that she wrote down the words on the ground until her foot bled and it hurt a lot. But she thinks that all the pain and disability that she overcame, helped her get this far. Now, as a Madan Puraskar prize winner, she says 'I am very happy to get the award.' But she still wants to keep writing because she knows that if she can fight for something and achieve it, there can never be regret but only happy end.

Without impossibility, there is nothing to fight for or challenge for in the world. Kumari Ghimire is 30 years old woman who overcame all her disability and difficulties to even win one of the most prestigious prize in Nepal. Kumari Ghimire is inspirational as she never gave up and kept fighting against the impossibility and the disability and finally achieved what she wanted to. It was her progress that people acknowledge, not how well her writing is. Kumari Ghimire is now a famous writer in Nepal and she still works on improving her writing because she thinks that her writing is not perfect. Impossibility is worth fighting for.

Here is her poem:
'What is the interpretation of the New Millennium'?

A soft light glimmers
on the eve of people's deaths
The fern unfurls out of season
without its stem
having matured

No mourning will be observed now
on the eves of people's deaths
What is the interpretation of this age?
A separate live identity
thrives inside a scream

After a hollow ending
the raped
accused
abducted
orphaned skeletons
won't exorcise their agitation
at the crossroads of expression
as one exorcises
witches and ghosts
by sacrificing chicks

The sari and blouse torn in
the poverty of a rag to wear
in the freezing winters
dam the snow rivers of the season
and yet there is no hint of bitterness
The yearned-for attacks
not just of one winter
but of thunder and lightning
spread no mutinous luminescence
A peaceful flame burns forever
at evening time in the homes of the dead
It is likely that
the cultured people who affect devotion
do not wish to offer to the fire
a single tear
for this millennium
Now, what is the interpretation of this age?
Each hurting moment
Each hurting tremor
kisses the arrival of the new millennium
without the slightest cry of pain

Not a stir of the new millennium came
to the frostbitten heels of the old grandmother
to the ragged tunic of the old grandfather
The water jugs filled by a young girl
near this courtyard of poverty
taunt the new millennium
the flowers she has plucked and arranged
unearth countless realities
and search in the grandmother's torn sari and blouse
in the grandfather's patched tunic
for the interpretation of the new millennium

The New World

'All people are born equal and so have equal rights' - article 1 of the universal declaration of human rights. Yes, very little population of the world are and they are mostly the people who have a luxurious life with lots of money. However, the rest of the world had to suffer and are still suffering because of the ill-treatment. Equality means the state of being equal in rights and opportunities. If I had a chance to change the world, where people were valued and equally treated, wouldn't the world be a lot better than now? A world where no people have to worry about being mistreated, where equality is the priority.

First of all, everybody will get a voice. These days, it is hard to see a up-stander who fight against the wrong. It is because everybody else is most likely to be a bystander, who is apathetic to the situation and let the wrong be. Nobody will hear his voice, and although it is heard, it will not be so effective. But once everybody is equally valued, everybody else will listen to his voice and his opinions very carefully, with respect. People will not underestimate his opinion or ignore it for they know that the up-stander is no different than themselves, and there is no reason to fear of participating and standing up for their rights. As an example, the Egyptians' uprising again Hosni Mubarak, the present president of Egypt. People had reasons of protesting. One of their reasons, is because they had to be living poorly. 20 to 30 percent of the Egyptian population, was investigated to be below the poverty line. It was caused by the uneven development by the Egyptian government, where poor gets poorer and the rich gets richer. As the Egyptian citizens were happened to be in the same situation where they were all suffering with poverty, they all decided to stand against the Egyptian government. Plus, Hosni Mubarak was planning to inherit his position to his son later. And Egyptians couldn't be angered more - More civilian started to join the protest and the protest grew larger where it was out of control.

Additionally, people would not have to compete for power and control. I define the word 'power' as pride. All the fighting for power and control is because people want pride and be respected. But if each one gets same amount of respect and pride, there will be no need for the conflict. As I learned last year, there were many conflicts and fights between people for power and control during the middle age. One of the examples would be the archbishop of Canterbury, Thomas Becket's story. Henry the Second, the king of England at the time, was in conflict with Thomas Becket, over the Church and its rights. Henry the Second wanted to have control over the Church for more power. After all, Thomas Becket disagreed with the idea and started to stand against the ruler. Soon the archbishop of Canterbury was accidentally murdered by the soldiers who misunderstood the king's order. In the New World, people wouldn't have to fight because everybody gets the same amount of respect. Nobody is bothered to take control and have power because all people are same. Everybody is never greedy and are happy about being fairly respected.

In other words, if people are evenly respected, treated and given opportunities, there will be no uprising or fights and conflicts as people can never be greedy. No one will ever have a reason to be greedy over pride or power because all people have the same amount of respect, pride and power in the New World.

HUNGER GAMES BLOG POST

For the Hunger Games project, I worked with jung ho and made a propaganda poster. We made a propaganda poster because although there are many things that Capitol is hiding, we thought that the idea of inequality between the people in the districts and the citizens of Capitol, is the most important among all. The propaganda poster is aimed at the citizens of the Capitol to make them think that the districts of Panem are wealthy and have enough food to eat. The Capitol has made the poster using the glittering generalities and transfer devices. Glittering generalities device is a type of propaganda, which uses virtue words to stir up emotions of viewers either positively or negatively. Transfer device is a type of propaganda where symbols are used to carry over authority and stir up emotions of the viewers. The poster of the stomach and steak symbolizes the fullness and luxurious lifestyle of the district people (This is a blatant lie – the Capitol would want to cover up the injustice). The car, house and the money on the background represent the wealth (another exaggeration) The medicine and the shot are trying to show us that the citizens are healthy and getting proper treatment (Again, clearly untrue). The words stand out in the poster suggesting that this propaganda’s purpose is to make Capitol citizens think that the districts are good places to live and how wealthy and well the people are living. Also because the district people are living a good life, the Capitol people would become apathetic and lack concern to district people’s life.

CRYSTAL NIGHT - TURNING POINT

After the Reichstag building burned down in February 1933 under suspicious circumstances, Hitler used this event to suspend all civil liberties - blaming all communists. Then all the communists were imprisoned without any trial, into the 1st established concentration camp built in Dachau. However, this was just the beginning of long reign of persecution.

'Crystal Night' is an English translation for Kristalnacht. This horrific event happened in Germany in 1938, November 9th. That night began when all the synagogues burned, Jewish business were destroyed. Nazi gangs treated Jews harshly. After many synagogues burned, people started to become suspicious and fearful of Nazi party. On this night of broken glass, the Nazis had burnt 275 synagogues and killed at least 100 Jews. But that was not all. Hitler was really persuasive orally and accused Jews of being responsible for Germany's problems. 30,000 Jews were in concentration camp after this event. The Nazis' real purpose at this stage, was not killing the Jews, but banishing them out of the country. All Jews had to be obedient in order to save their lives. After this night, many Jews tried to leave the country as well. Goering, who was the minister of the interior, head of the police, and the violent S.A militia, said 'Jews must bear the consequences', and as expected, Jews were to be hurt.

I feel it is amazing how some Germans were actually seduced into the Nazi party, claiming all Jews as the problem. Hitler's conspiracy worked too well, leaving naive Jews to face the pain and suffering they never deserved. Also, I was astonished with Andre's family's situation ( Class Reading from Facing History) Andre, a young boy, was deciding whether to join the German crowd throwing stones at the Jewish shops. His dad and mother said they would follow Andre's choice, and as Andrew rejected the vicious idea, the whole family decided to leave the country to avoid having to make choices like this. Refusing to participate would cause them to be labeled as anti-Hitler and they would be in danger of being sent to the concentration camp. This type of event makes me feel sad. I hope that I would have had Andre's courage, being an up-stander against wrong acts.
